So you registered your business in Alberta and now you’re wondering what comes next. The name is locked in, you're pumped to start this scary but exciting journey… and then the overwhelm sets in. Whether you’ve just registered your sole prop or you’ve been in business for a couple years, nobody really talks exactly how they become a legit brand in the real world.

Having worked with multiple business owners at every stage, the number one thing I hear is "I just wish someone had told me the right order of what to get done for my business." So here it is. Seven steps you can take to cover what you need to show up as a successful brand, in an order that makes sense. Let's get into it.

The 7 Steps We’ll Cover After You’ve Registered

  • Step 1: Get clear on your direction

  • Step 2: Invest in professional branding

  • Step 3: Set up your social media profiles

  • Step 4: Book your brand photoshoot

  • Step 5: Build your website

  • Step 6: Claim your Google Business Profile

  • Step 7: Order your printed materials

Why the Order You Do Things Matters

Think of it like building a house. You do not pick the paint colours before the walls are up. Your brand works the same way. Doing things out of sequence means re-doing things you already paid for, and nobody has time or budget for that.

Step 1: Get Clear on Your Direction

Before a single logo gets made, you need to know who you are as a business. This is the foundation everything else gets built on and skipping it is where you’ll waste the most money. You’d be surprised how many business owners I’ve had video calls with and they cannot tell me who they ideally desire to serve and what visual style they like. Even jotting down a few sentences puts you miles ahead.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is your ideal client and what do they care about? (Get specific!)

  • What feeling do you want people to have when they find you?

  • Are you high end and polished, warm and approachable, or bold and energetic?

  • What makes you different from everyone else doing what you do?

Step 2: Invest in Professional Small Business Branding

Your branding is not just your logo. It is your full visual identity and it is the step that makes every other step on this list easier and cheaper. When your branding is solid, everything becomes plug and play.

Your brand kit should include:

  • Primary, secondary, and icon logo versions

  • A colour palette

  • Font pairings

  • Brand patterns, textures, or supporting visuals

I always create comprehensive brand packages for my clients.

Step 3: Set Up Your Social Media Profiles

With your brand kit ready, this step actually becomes fun. Pick one or two platforms where your ideal clients spend time and focus there first. Social media marketing for small businesses works best when you show up consistently and look like yourself doing it. You’ll want to make sure you can claim the handle that matches your brand’s official name before someone else scoops it up.

Don't worry about not having your professional photos done yet, we’re just setting you up for the next few steps and getting this out of the way. If your designer gave you assets like a profile photo, social media templates, or highlight covers, you’ll want to start adding those to look established right off the bat.

Step 3: Book Your Brand Photoshoot

This is the most common order of operations mistake I see. Business owners book their branding photoshoot before their brand is finalized and end up reshooting later because nothing quite matches. Do it after your brand is locked in and you will walk away with a full content library that works everywhere. Your brand designer should have provided you with brand colours, photography inspiration and photo treatment styles. This can help your photographer develop their creative direction for your shoot and it helps you pick out a couple outfits that match your vibe. You can even send your brand presentation to your photographer so they can plan ahead.

Your brand photoshoot should include:

  • Professional portraits and headshots of you

  • Lifestyle and behind the scenes shots

  • Your product or service in action

  • Workspace or detail images for texture and variety

Step 4: Build Your Website

Now that your branding is done and your photos are ready, your web designer can build something cohesive and intentional from day one. A clean three to five page site with a clear message and strong visuals will do more for your business than an overwhelming site that took forever to launch. You’ll need to send whoever is building your site:

  • Your brand package presentation deck (again everything is based off of this document)

  • Some inspo on Pinterest or direct links to websites that you like and why

  • All of your visual assets like photos and logos

If you're curious this is how much it usually costs to get a website built.

Step 5: Claim Your Google Business Profile

This one is completely free and it is one of the first things potential clients see when they Google you. This is essentially Google Maps. Fill this out completely with your logo, brand photos, services, and website link. Do not leave anything blank or Google will demote your listing. After this is done, then ask your first few happy clients to leave a review because those do a lot of the selling for you. You can ask them to talk about a specific service or product they received to help with search-ability.

Step 6: Order Your Printed Materials

By the time you get here, this step is easy because everything is already done. Your logo files are ready, your colours are locked in, and your designer has everything your printer needs. Some materials that most businesses need after branding:

  • Business cards

  • Brochures

  • Store signage

  • Product packaging

  • Menus

  • Merchandise like sticker, hats, mugs, t-shirts

Step 7: Brand Your Client Facing Documents

This is the step most people skip and one of the most powerful. Your proposals, invoices, contracts, and welcome packages are all part of the client experience. When they look branded and polished, they build trust every single time someone receives them. Tools like HoneyBook, Dubsado, or Canva Pro make this easy to set up in an afternoon and your designer can absolutely help out with the visual side of things if need be.

A Quick Note on Small Business Grants in Alberta

There are small business grants in Alberta that may help offset some of these startup costs. Organizations like Futurpreneur, Alberta Innovates, and the Canadian Digital Adoption Program have offered funding for things like websites and digital tools. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce to see what is available to you.
