If you're wondering how much website design really costs in Calgary nowadays, you’re in the right place. When working with a designer or even an agency, the overall price can really vary. Let’s break it down.

How Much Does Custom Website Design Cost in Calgary?

On average, custom website design in Calgary costs between $3,000 and $8,000 when hiring an independent designer, while larger full-service marketing agencies typically charge between $10,000 and $25,000+ for a standard 4-to-5 page business website.

Working with an independent designer is usually going to land you on the lower end, whereas design agencies with multiple creatives tend to be quite a bit higher due to their overhead costs. In chatting with other designers in the industry as well as basing this off of my current rate, your investment will range from around $1,000 for a basic one-pager site to $10,000 for a fully customized site with all the bells and whistles, with $3,000-$8,000 being the sweet spot. Now, this is a general estimate and there are always going to be other designers who charge more or less.

Agencies on the other hand, can be $10,000 to $25,000+ and rarely offer an estimate under $8,000. This larger investment covers their overhead costs such as office space rentals downtown, salaries of project managers to keep your project running smoothly, front and back end developers, copywriters, and user experience (UX) designers. This is a fantastic option if you have the extra cash to be able to access all of their talent, however it might be out of budget for the majority of small businesses.

Should You DIY Your Website, or Hire a Professional?

Sometimes hiring a professional for these types of projects can be pricey if your budget is currently non-existent (we've all been there).

I am biased but to be honest, if your business needs a website – meaning your clients book online, view your work, check out your menu ahead of time – then I would highly recommend you invest in a fully optimized, functional website. I’ve seen a lot of business owners who have put this one on the backburner and it has unfortunetly lost them business (yikes).

Now by all means I am not saying you need to go hire the first, most expensive designer you come across when you're first starting out. Actually, I do recommend you DIY everything to get your business going to avoid paying too much too early. When you are ready to take that next step after you have some good revenue, you know your ideal client, and what the website will be used for, that’s when you commit.

If the above rates are just too much right now, you can always ask your designer if you can take on more in the process. For example, in the past I have offered to do the basic SEO setup, website layout and launch for a more basic site, while the client took care of writing their own content. This can cut costs down from say $5,000 to $3,000.

Designers are usually flexible if you don’t low ball them for premium, full-service scope. We tend to be open to work something out for the both of us. We want to see you succeed!

What is the Average Hourly Rate for a Calgary Web Designer?

In 2026, professional freelancers and independent designers in Calgary in my conversations generally charge between $75 and $125 per hour. Boutique design studios typically rate their time around $125 to $150 per hour, while large, full-service corporate agencies scale their billable hours from $150 to over $200 per hour depending on the complexity of the development.
